National and regional self-consciousness has risen dramatically throughout Europe over the last few years. On a political level, this has expressed itself in the rise of political parties having distinctive nationalistic policies, as well as a growing demand for referenda to decide whether there should be more self-determination within regional and linguistic borders.
On a business level, large companies operating throughout Europe must now become ever more sensitive to the opinions and motivations of their local workforces; when strategic decisions are being considered that will impact on the language markets in which they operate, it is vital to have up to date knowledge of their mood.
Recently TML has been involved in transcribing and translating a number of questionnaires and surveys on behalf of the HR department of a Fortune 500 company that has permanent workforces in 13 language markets throughout Europe.
The project included transcribing hand written questionnaires that allowed for anonymous free comment and expression, rather than being a simple yes/no or multiple choice survey.
After the transcription into electronic format was completed, translations of all the local language markets into English were undertaken. The results of the European questionnaire were then analyzed in a single language and used by management at the strategic level in formulating policies more likely to receive a positive reception.
TML were asked to conduct the first questionnaire of this kind two years ago. Such was the success of the pilot in terms of added knowledge value to the Company, it considers it worthwhile to carry out this project on a regular basis.
If you have a specific and/or unusual translation requirement, TML would welcome the opportunity of helping you. Call Bruce Mimin on +44(0)1722 415012, Bruce.Mimin@translationmanagement.com
